Regenerative medicine & skin quality

Mesotherapy

Many fine micro-injections deliver an individually tailored cocktail of active ingredients directly into the skin – for more freshness, moisture and an even complexion, with practically no downtime.

Treatable areas

  • Dull facial skin
  • Dry skin
  • Fine lines
  • Scalp

Mesotherapy is a gentle, regenerative procedure of aesthetic medicine: via numerous superficial micro-injections (intradermal, directly into the upper dermis), an individually composed cocktail of active ingredients is introduced – typically non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid, vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants and trace elements. Unlike a filler, it does not build up volume but supports the skin on the level of its supply.

It is suitable above all when the skin appears tired, dull or dry or shows the first fine, crepey lines – a gentle entry into regenerative skin treatment with practically no downtime. Mesotherapy works as a course of treatment across several sessions, not as a one-off application. After medical clarification, scalp mesotherapy may be considered as a supportive component for thinning hair – not as a cure.

Indications

Who it is suitable for

Whether a treatment makes medical sense in your case is something we determine together in a personal consultation. Typical concerns include:

  • Tired, dull skin that is to look fresher again (“glow”) – for example after sun, stress or lifestyle
  • Dry skin in need of intensive moisture supply
  • Fine, crepey lines and a beginning loss of firmness
  • A gentle entry into regenerative skin medicine without surgery and with minimal downtime
  • Scalp mesotherapy as a supportive option for thinning hair – only after medical clarification of the causes

Step by step

How the treatment works

This is how the treatment usually proceeds with us – from the first consultation through to aftercare.

  1. Consultation and skin analysis

In a personal conversation we record your wishes, skin type and medical history, check for contraindications and determine the areas and active ingredients. You are informed in detail about the procedure, effect, limits, risks and billing; in the case of a hair-related wish, we first clarify the possible cause of the hair loss.

  2. Preparation and individual mixture

The skin is thoroughly cleansed and disinfected; on request an anaesthetic cream takes effect over about 20 to 30 minutes. In parallel we compose the cocktail of active ingredients to match your findings.

  3. Micro-injections

With a very fine needle, numerous superficial injections are placed in a fine grid – depending on the technique, by hand or with an injection device. Small wheals (slight, intended elevations of the skin) indicate that the active ingredient lies in the correct layer.

  4. Conclusion and cooling

Immediately afterwards we cool the treated areas to relieve redness and swelling, and give you specific advice for the first days.

  5. Course plan and check-up

Usually three to six sessions at intervals of two to four weeks are sensible, followed by refreshers about every three months. At a check-up appointment we assess the development and adjust the mixture or intervals if needed.

Patient information

Safety & patient information

Responsible treatment includes open information about possible risks and side effects – even when they occur only rarely.

  • Redness and small wheals

Very frequent and as a rule intended or harmless: at the puncture sites, a widespread redness and small wheals (slight elevations of the skin) appear immediately after the treatment, indicating that the active ingredient lies in the correct layer. These reactions usually subside on their own within a few hours and can be relieved by cooling.

  • Small bruises (haematomas)

Through the many fine punctures, a small skin vessel can be injured, so that tiny blue marks arise. These are harmless and usually disappear within a few days; as a rule they can be covered well with make-up. Blood-thinning medication or certain dietary supplements can intensify this tendency.

  • Swelling and tenderness to touch

In the first hours to days, the treated areas can be slightly swollen or tender to the touch. These complaints are temporary and usually subside quickly.

  • Itching and slight skin irritation

Occasionally, itching or a slight feeling of tension in the skin can occur after the treatment. Scratching or rubbing should be avoided so as not to irritate the small puncture sites. In the case of persistent or increasing itching with a rash, you should contact us.

  • Temporary pigment changes

In particular with intense sunlight shortly after the treatment, temporarily lighter or darker spots can appear at the puncture sites. Consistent sun protection in the days after the treatment prevents this risk; usually such changes are temporary.

  • Infections

As with any injection, germs can enter despite a sterile way of working and trigger a local infection, which manifests through increasing redness, warmth, pain or the formation of pus. Such reactions are rare but must be treated medically. In the event of corresponding signs you should contact us immediately.

  • Allergic reactions to ingredients

Because a cocktail of several substances is introduced in mesotherapy, allergic or intolerance reactions to individual ingredients are possible. These range from local redness and swelling to – very rarely – a pronounced allergic reaction that requires prompt medical care. A careful allergy history before the treatment serves to prevent this.

  • Nodules and delayed inflammatory reactions

Rarely, small, temporary hardenings or – with a delay – inflammatory reactions can form at the injection sites. Such reactions should be assessed medically and treated depending on the findings.

  • Scars in the case of improper treatment or manipulation

With proper, superficial injection technique, permanent scars are very unlikely. However, if the puncture sites are scratched open or manipulated, or if an untreated infection occurs, a scar may in rare cases remain. Following the aftercare advice minimises this risk.

When we do not treat

In certain situations we do not carry out a treatment, or only at a later time – for your safety.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding – for lack of sufficient safety data, we refrain from the treatment during this time.
  • Acute infections, inflammation or open areas of skin in the treatment area (e.g. an active lip or facial herpes or an acute acne with pustules); the treatment is postponed until it has subsided.
  • Known allergy or intolerance to one of the intended ingredients of the cocktail of active ingredients or to local anaesthetics.
  • Active autoimmune or chronic inflammatory skin conditions that may speak against a micro-injection – here an individual medical assessment is required.
  • Known coagulation disorders or a therapy with blood-thinning medication; a treatment is carried out only after medical consultation and careful consideration of benefit and risk.
  • A tendency to excessive scar formation (keloids) in the planned treatment area.
  • Severe, insufficiently controlled general illnesses (e.g. a poorly controlled diabetes mellitus) that can impair wound healing or increase the risk of infection.
  • Unclear hair loss without prior clarification of the cause, when a scalp mesotherapy is being considered.
  • Unrealistic expectations or a treatment wish for which, from a medical point of view, there is no sensible indication.

This information does not replace a personal medical consultation. Before every treatment we inform you individually about the procedure, risks and alternatives.

In depth

Medical details & background

How it works & the evidence

The basic idea of mesotherapy is to introduce active ingredients via many small injections directly into the upper dermis – precisely where they are meant to act, without the detour through the circulatory system. The term “meso” refers to the middle germ layer (mesoderm), from which, among other things, the connective tissue of the skin is derived.

A central component of many mixtures is non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid: unlike the cross-linked hyaluronic acid of a filler, it does not support lines but binds water and supplies the skin with moisture from within; depending on the concept, vitamins, antioxidants, amino acids and trace elements are added. In addition, the mechanical stimulus of the many fine punctures is discussed as a possible factor of action – how strongly it contributes has not been conclusively clarified scientifically.

Because the introduced substances are broken down by the body, mesotherapy is not a permanent procedure but is designed for application as a course of treatment; the mixture and the intervals can be adjusted over time to the individual reaction of the skin.

The scientific data situation on mesotherapy is heterogeneous and depends strongly on the protocol and the active ingredients used. For improved skin moisture and a fresher complexion through intradermally introduced, hyaluronic-acid-containing mixtures, controlled studies and reviews speak with cautiously positive but limited significance – many investigations are small, short and, owing to very different treatment schemes, difficult to compare. As there is no single standardised treatment, results cannot readily be transferred to other mixtures; we orient ourselves towards well-tolerated, comprehensibly justified components.

For scalp mesotherapy in cases of hair loss, the evidence is particularly limited and inconsistent – it is not a proven cure and replaces neither the clarification of the cause nor established measures. Overall: the effects vary from person to person and cannot be guaranteed; we expressly name the limits of the evidence.

Preparing for your treatment

A few simple measures before your appointment help you contribute to the best possible result with as few complications as possible.

  • Where possible, avoid intensive sunbathing and tanning beds in the days before the treatment; freshly tanned or irritated skin should subside before the treatment.
  • Please do not stop blood-thinning medication or anticoagulant painkillers (e.g. from the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) on your own initiative – discuss their use in advance with us and your treating physician, in order to assess the tendency to bruise.
  • Certain dietary supplements and herbal preparations (such as fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo) as well as alcohol can increase the tendency to bruise; a time interval can be sensible.
  • Inform us of your complete medical history, known allergies, previous aesthetic treatments as well as any tendency to herpes – with a known tendency to herpes, a preventive measure can be sensible.
  • Where possible, come without make-up in the area to be treated, or expect a thorough cleansing of the skin before the treatment.
  • Before important social occasions, plan a small time buffer, as redness, small wheals or occasionally a bruise can briefly be visible.
Aftercare

The right care after treatment supports healing and the result. You will receive individual recommendations from us – as a rule:

  • Cool the treated areas carefully if needed, in order to counteract redness and swelling; do not apply strong pressure in doing so.
  • Do not touch, rub or scratch the puncture sites in the first hours if possible, and refrain from make-up in the treated area on this day, in order to avoid irritation and the entry of germs.
  • Avoid intensive exercise, sauna, steam bath, tanning beds and very hot baths for about 24 to 48 hours, as heat and increased circulation can intensify redness and swelling.
  • Protect the skin consistently from UV radiation and use a high sun protection factor (SPF 50+) in the days after the treatment; avoid direct, intense sunlight in order to prevent pigment shifts.
  • On the day of treatment, avoid alcohol and blood-thinning substances where possible, as these can promote bruising.
  • Care for the skin gently in the first few days with mild, low-irritant products, and refrain from peels, aggressive active ingredients (such as high-dose acids or retinoids) as well as microneedling in the treated area.
  • Keep the agreed follow-up appointments of the course of treatment, as the effect of mesotherapy is based on the repeated application at defined intervals.
  • Contact us if unusual complaints occur – in particular increasing pain, an increasing swelling with warmth, the formation of pus or signs of an allergic reaction.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers to questions we are asked particularly often about “Mesotherapy”.

Most patients find the many small, superficial punctures well tolerable – comparable to fine needle pricks. On request, an anaesthetic cream applied beforehand clearly reduces the sensation; more sensitive areas such as the forehead or the region around the eyes can react somewhat more sensitively.

The consultation, skin analysis and micro-injections are carried out exclusively by licensed physicians with a dermatological background – important because the mixture of active ingredients must be composed responsibly, and because contraindications as well as possible causes (for example in the case of hair loss) have to be properly clarified in advance.

There is no fixed age limit; what matters is your skin condition and realistic expectations. In minors we do not, as a matter of principle, carry out aesthetically motivated treatments; we advise very young people with particular restraint and address openly when, in our view, there is no indication for treatment.

Immediately after a session the skin can appear fresher and plumper, initially overlaid by redness and wheals. A more even, more stable impression usually only sets in over the course of the treatment – mesotherapy is not an “instant effect” but a gradual build-up that varies individually in degree.

Scalp mesotherapy may, after careful medical clarification, be considered as a supportive component for thinning hair – not a cure, and without a guarantee of success. A precondition is prior clarification of the cause, as different forms of hair loss require different measures; the evidence is limited and strongly protocol-dependent.

If the aim is to build up volume or to support deeper lines, a hyaluronic acid filler is the more suitable procedure; for lines caused by muscle movement, botulinum toxin, and for concerns of skin texture and surface, ablative laser procedures (fractional CO₂ or Erbium:YAG laser) can be more sensible. Depending on the concern, mesotherapy can also be used in a complementary way alongside these procedures.
